Burglar Arrested

14-23728

Arrested: 16 year old transient male

Synopsis:
On 11/27/14, a Richland resident discovered a burglary had occurred at her residence located in the 200 block of Douglass.  Officers determined the burglar entered the occupied residence while one of the residents was asleep.  Property was stolen during the burglary.

On 11/28/14, a Richland resident awoke to discover a burglar in her residence.  The burglar threatened the resident while holding a large flashlight.  The burglar fled with property stolen from the residence.  The resident called the RPD and provided a description of the burglar.  Pasco Police assisted the RPD with a K-9 track which tracked the offender to the 300 block of Goethals.  Due to the conditions (30 mph winds) officers were not able to determine an exact last known location.  During the investigation officers learned of an unreported burglary which happened the day before in the 200 block of Douglass.

A couple of hours later, a resident in the same neighborhood reported a suspicious male in the area.  Officers located the male passed out in the yard of a neighbor.  The resident from the earlier burglary was able to positively identify the male as the burglar she had encountered earlier.  The male was transported to Kadlec for treatment from what appeared to be intoxication.  The male was admitted into Kadlec.

A search warrant was served at an address in the 300 block of Goethals where property from three neighborhood burglaries was located.

On 11/29/14, RPD attempted to locate the male to arrest him and learned he was no longer at Kadlec.  Officers located the male in the 300 block of Goethals.  The male fled from officers.  Officers secured the area.  Deputies from the Benton County Sheriff's Office arrived and provided K-9 support to track the suspect.  When officers attempted to arrest the male he assaulted officers and the K-9.  The male was eventually taken into custody and transported to Kadlec where he was treated for injuries suffered during the arrest.  The male was booked into the Benton/Franklin County Juvenile facility for numerous felony crimes including: robbery, residential burglary, and assault on a police officer.

Richland Police Arrest Burglar Exiting Victim's Home

Arrested:  Venegas, Juan P.; 18 year of age male, Yakima address
Charge:  Residential Burglary

Synopsis:

At about 8:45 AM today Richland police officers were advised of a 911 call involving a subject beating on the front door of a residence in the 1000 block of Pattyton Lane.  As officers were responding, the call was upgraded to a burglary in progress.  The 18 year old son of the homeowner was inside the house and said that a subject had now broken in and was in the process of stealing their possessions.

The first officer to arrive saw an SUV in the driveway that belonged to the suspect.  As he approached the front door a male, later identified as Venegas, came outside.  In his arms he was holding an X Box, a camera and several game controllers.  The suspect was confronted, dropped what he had been holding and fled back into the residence.  The officer chased the suspect through the house and out of the back door.

The suspect went through a number of back yards.  Officers set up containment and called for the assistance of a Benton County SO K-9 Unit.  The K-9 began tracking the suspect.  As he approached where the suspect was hiding, Venegas put his hands into the air and surrendered.  He was taken into custody without further incident.

The items Venegas had stolen were photographed and returned to the victim.  It appears as if Venegas may have observed the female homeowner leave and decided to burglarize the residence.  Entry was made by prying off a dog door on the exterior of the home.

Venegas was reportedly arrested for a similar crime in Chicago in March of this year.  Chicago PD has been contacted and we are awaiting information on any charges regarding their case.

Venegas was booked into the Benton County jail on charges of Residential Burglary.

Richland Police Arrest Organized Retail Theft Ringleader

Arrested:  Cano, Fernando M.; 49 year of age male, Pasco resident
Charges:  Organized Retail Theft, Trafficking in Stolen Property 1st Degree, Possession of Stolen Firearm

Arrested:  Shaffer, Kaleb A.; 38 year of age male, Pasco resident
Charge:  Trafficking Stolen Property, felony warrants

Synopsis:
Since April, 2014 the Richland Police Street Crimes Unit (SCU), assisted by detectives from the Metro Drug Task Force, have been investigating a series of retail thefts throughout the Tri-Cities.  The investigation led to the identification of Cano as a known “fence” for stolen property.  Information was received that Cano had stolen and sold 150-200 pair of men’s Levis jeans and had transported them to Mexico to be sold.  Cano had also arranged the theft of gas powered tools such as line trimmers and chain saws.

SCU investigators contacted employees of Fred Meyer (Kroger Corporation) who assisted in the acquisition of 20 pair of Levis jeans.  A detective from the Metro Drug Task Force assisted in setting up a sale of the merchandise to Cano at his home in Pasco for $200.  During the sale Cano asked if it would be possible to steal a Toro lawn mower, DeWalt reciprocating saw, and a pair of Chinook boots in size 9.  As the investigation progressed, Cano called and asked for Home Depot, Lowes, Fred Meyer and JC Penney gift cards.
Another controlled sale of jeans took place on June 25.  The Metro Drug Task Force assisted again in the transaction that included 21 pair of jeans.  During this sale Cano put the jeans into a shed and provided information on additional items he wanted the undercover personnel to steal.  JC Penney was identified as a source of some material but Cano warned the detectives to be careful due to the cameras in place to deter theft.

On June 26 officer served a search warrant at Cano’s home in Pasco.  Metro Drug Task Force detectives and Pasco PD personnel assisted Richland’s SCU (and RPD detective section) in the service of the warrant.   Cano and Shaffer were contacted inside a car in the alley near Cano’s home.  Shaffer stated that he was at the home to sell a jack that had been stolen earlier in the day from an auto parts store in Pasco and a DeWalt drill stolen from the Richland Home Depot.  He was taken into custody by Pasco PD.

Inside the home and shed located on the property were 136 pair of jeans, numerous pairs of new shoes, 3 lawn mowers, 4 line trimmers, 2 chain saws, 2 leaf blowers, Kobalt hand tools, 2 pressure washers, hedge trimmer, numerous Washington EBT cards, stolen gift cards, and a firearm stolen in a 2008 Richland case.  Over $40,000 in cash was scattered throughout the house.  Stolen property has an estimated value of over $20,000.

This case is part of a continuing retail theft and fraud investigation.  Members of Kroger Corporation (to include Fred Meyer and QFC) played a significant role in the apprehension of this individual and continue to be partners in combatting organized retail theft.

California Murder Suspect Arrested in Richland

The information below (updated this morning) was released by the Madera County  Sheriff's Office.

RE:  AHWAHNEE MAN WANTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER CAPTURED IN WASHINGTON

Madera County – Sheriff John Anderson this afternoon announced Adrian Joseph Reyes, wanted for attempted murder, is behind bars -- captured shortly after 10 AM June 12 in Richland, WA.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office had been searching for the 29-year old Ahwahnee man following a violent attack on another man in Coarsegold in April.

Both Reyes and 20-year old Robert Lee Huber, of Oakhurst, were both wanted for robbing a man, beating him, and then shooting him during the early morning hours of April 2.

Huber was captured last month by Metro Police in Las Vegas. He was extradited to Madera on May 28 and promptly booked into Madera County Department of Corrections, where he remains on a no-bail hold.

As for Reyes, a tip to Crime Stoppers in Washington, led to his arrest. Because the fugitive was considered armed and dangerous, several law enforcement agencies were called in to assist in his apprehension.

HOW THEY CAPTURED MADERA COUNTY’S MOST WANTED & DANGEROUS FUGITIVE

At round 4 pm June 11, the Kennewick Police Department, which also coordinates the regional Crime Stoppers Tip line for that part of Washington State, received a tip that Reyes could be found hiding in a house located on Davenport Street in Richland.

Kennewick Police immediately notified Richland Police, who in turn coordinated with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

Recognizing the danger that Reyes possibly posed, the agencies worked together to quickly organize a multi-agency team to carry out the operation.

Teams involved in his apprehension included: Fugitive Task Force Officers with the US Marshals Service, Richland PD’s Street Crimes Unit and Field Operations staff, Benton County Sheriff's Office, Kennewick Police, and the Tri-City Regional SWAT Team.

Shortly before 10 AM June 12, Reyes was spotted leaving the house on Davenport Street. He then got into his car and drove off. When Officers tried to pull him over, he took off at a high rate of speed, then pulled into the parking lot of nearby Fran Rish Stadium.  Reyes ditched the car, and led officers on a foot chase through the parking lot, then through a commercial district in the city, where the chase finally ended when he, quite literally, ran straight into the arms of officers.

Reyes was taken into custody without incident and transported to Benton County jail where he was booked for felony eluding and obstruction. He remains jailed awaiting extradition to Madera County on murder charges.

Meantime, Sheriff John Anderson commended the excellent work of all sworn personnel involved.  And, he also credits Crime Stoppers for helping to clear this case.

With the advent of social media, he says, “Let this arrest be a warning to all fugitives:  you can run, but you can no longer hide.”

Erica Stuart, Madera County Sheriff's Office public Information Officer provided the body of the information quoted above. Her office number is 559-675-7976.

They were able to determine the following: Rebecca Charron was the parent of a juvenile female at the scene. The juvenile female had been involved with a male student from Hanford High School, which she also attended. The two had broken off their relationship, which had led to a series of ongoing problems between them. Charron felt her daughter was being harassed by the male student. On this date, she went to the school and waited in the parking lot. Her daughter left the school grounds without any problems.

Nothing occurred at the school.

Both Charron and her daughter drove past the 7-11 on George Washington Way. Charron observed the juvenile male in the parking lot. She drove into the parking lot and confronted him. She displayed a semi-automatic handgun, while still in the holster, pointed it at the male, and made a comment to the effect of, “Don’t make me use this.” Multiple witnesses confirmed the event and there were several 911 calls made to the police. Charron returned to her vehicle and waited for a police response. She was subsequently taken into custody for Assault 2nd degree and for carrying a loaded firearm onto school grounds without a concealed weapons permit.

No one was hurt during the incident.

Metal Theft Suspect Arrested in Richland

Arrested:  Irwin, Patrick L; 60 year of age male, Richland address
Charges:  Trespass 2nd Degree, Theft, Destruction of Private Property

Arrested:  Halka, James B.; 47 year of age male, Richland address
Charge:  Misdemeanor warrant for Theft 3rd Degree

Synopsis:
On 1-27-14, at about 11:10 AM RPD officers were dispatched to a call of a suspicious person in the area of Leslie Road and Columbia Park Trail.  A male subject was seen walking in the area carrying a large power saw.  The area is owned by the Columbia Irrigation District (CID) and much of the land is posted with No Trespassing signs.

Officers stopped a truck leaving the area that was driven by Irwin.  The truck had a number of pieces of metal including some grating made out of rebar that appeared to have been freshly cut.  Irwin claimed to have been given permission to remove metal from the area by the irrigation district.  When contacted, CID staff informed investigators that no permission was given for anyone to be in the area.  It appeared that Irwin had used the gas powered metal saw to cut grates from the canals owned by CID.
Officers saw a large amount of metal in the bed of the truck Irwin was driving.  He claimed that he had scavenged the metal from construction sites around the Tri-Cities and most recently from two near the Convention Center.  Employees from both construction sites said that they had given Irwin permission to remove specific items from the sites while under their supervision but that he was not to trespass on their property without their presence.  From receipts found in the truck it appears as if Irwin is a frequent customer at Pacific Recycling and brought 152,362 pounds of material to them in 2013.  The brown Ford truck driven by Irwin should not be on unattended construction sites.
Irwin was arrested on the above charges.  Hulka, a passenger in the truck, had a warrant for his arrest.  Both males were booked into the Benton County Jail.

Contact Cpt. Mike Cobb, 942-7362, for additional information.
